Damn it, I\'m sick of all this blood.
« on: October 02, 2006, 09:31:00 pm »
Well as many of you may know, I just got out of the hospital with pneumonia.  Well I\'m home, not feeling all that well still, but I have a question.

Is it normal to be coughing up blood like a vomiting vampire?  I mean, anytime I lay down, I start coughing like a bitch, and all that comes up is blood.  My mom, step-dad, and sister keep telling me that I need to go back to the doctors, but I refuse to go because I\'m sick of being stuck with needles, and my arms are a bruised up mess.  I hate needles so much, and I\'m sick of feeling like a pin cushion.  I don\'t want to go back, so if anybody has ever had pneumonia is it normal to be coughing up blood?

His creepiness thanx any and all input as to his situation.

\"pneumonia currently accounts for 37 per cent of hospital deaths and still ranks among the ten leading causes of death in the United States\"

So be careful. The hospital is probably the best place for you.

\"Bed rest is of primary importance in assisting the body to combat the infection and in preventing unnecessary strain on the lungs and respiratory system. The fever presents problems of dehydration, as does diaphoresis. Fluids are given frequently by mouth, or intravenously if necessary. An accurate record must be kept of the patient\'s intake and output (although it should be kept in mind that most of the fluid loss in patients with pneumonia may be due to insensible water loss). Bowel elimination must be checked regularly since the peristaltic action of the intestines may be affected in severe pneumonia. Delirium is not uncommon because of the high fever and requires careful observation of the patient and measures to prevent self-injury. A liquid diet may be best if the patient is experiencing dyspnea.
Mouth care is given regularly to combat dryness and cracking of the lips, which occur as a result of fever and dehydration.
To relieve the chest pain caused by pleurisy in pneumonia, it may help to have the patient lie on the affected side so that the side is splinted during coughing episodes. Coughing and deep breathing exercises are helpful in removing mucus from the respiratory tract.
The temperature, pulse, and respiration are checked and recorded at least every 4 hours. When the temperature falls the patient usually perspires profusely, requiring frequent changing of gown and bed linens. The patient must be protected from drafts and kept warm during this time.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that universal precautions be observed for patients with pneumonia. \"

Coughing up blood is bad news. Please, please go back to the hospital.

Left untreated, there could be scarring of the lungs and possibly even death should you cough up too much. Teberculosis is also a consideration... TB is makred by couging up blood as you described. Untreated, it is lethal.

Be safe.

Thanx Gray, but I have a couple probs with the whole care suggestions given in your little list.  First of all, I cannot do the whole bed rest thing, cuz as soon as I lay down, I start coughing, and can\'t breath.  The next problem is with the laying on the affected side, well what do I do if I have double lung pneumonia which is exactly my situation.  I keep feeling worse and worse, and I can\'t stand it.

I need to get better, cuz I\'m missing too much school, and in the same token, I\'m also missing out on football.  I don\'t know what to do, I\'m so scared to go to the hospital, I hate needles so much.

As far as I can see, you\'re not cured. Bacterial pneumonia has the following symptoms:

  • Cough that may produce rust-colored or bloody sputum.
  • Chest pain that becomes worse when you inhale.
  • Shortness of breath at rest.
  • High fever, delirium, or confusion.

Actually, the hospital\'s not the best place unless you know what you\'re getting there. Just like any commercial institution, you can get raped in the ass and not know about it until after you\'re discharged. First, insist that you\'re monitored by a registered nurse, i.e. Nurseman (waves for him to come over). Then, make sure that your doctor\'s telling you everything, and has explained everything thouroughly and understandably. If you feel uncomfortable with one doc, ask to be switched. Trust your gut instinct. If they refuse or are unable to, see if you can be transferred to a different hospital. Your health is much more important than football; hell, if you die, there won\'t be any football left, period. Besides, who else will fill in as the \"spectacular chunk of forum man-meat\" when you\'re gone? Take care!

*hugs Creepy* Awww... i know all to well how you feel about going to the hospital. But, coughing up blood is NOT a good thing... You really should have it checked out. You don\'t want to end up in worse condition, do you? i know it sucks to be in the hospital, but the alternative could very well be worse... So please get it looked at, okay?

Well, I\'m too damn stubborn for my own good, and it got me today.  I got out of bed this afternoon, and collapsed.  I just plain passed out.  My mom and sis dragged my ass to the hospital, without me coming to until I was in the hospital for like 3 hours.  They told me the reason why I was coughing up all the blood was that my lungs are tore up.  I guess I have some scarring already on my left lung, and they said that my right lung is in bad shape.  I guess from my little knowledge of what the hell they were saying to me is that my left lung is operating at like 25% and my right lung is going at like 30-40%.  They said the coughing up blood is because my left lung was actually bleeding.  I guess it stopped, from what they said, cuz they didn\'t want to keep me in the hospital.  Well they did keep me for quite awhile, I went in at like 11:30 this morning from what my mom and sis said, and I just got home like 15 minutes ago. (6am).  I dunno, I\'m scared, I hope I get through this, cuz if I can\'t play football anymore, I\'m done for, I\'m just another loser.  I don\'t have the brains to get me into a good college, all I had going for me was football, and I\'m afraid of losing that.  Can somebody please pinch me, and tell me that this last week has just been a bad nightmare?  Please....................
